"Get kids excited about science"

Science you can touch

In 1970, Jim and Laddie Elwell arrived in Bemidji, MN, as faculty members of Bemidji State University's science department.

The dream of having a place for children to be submersed in science began with a local meeting in 1992, organized by Laddie. About 30 people showed up and before you knew it, the foundation was in place for Bemidji to host Headwaters Science Center.

"This will not be a museum; it will be a facility for 'hands-on' experimental kinds of exhibits, all fun and intellectually challenging." And that has been a guiding principle for Headwaters Science Center from that day forward.

The Bemidji community and visitors to Headwaters Science Center will continue to live the legacy started by Jim and Laddie Elwell - of experiencing hands-on, science you can touch and keeping these opportunities available for generations to come.
